Mercy

Unfortunately there are only two good songs on Duffy's debut album, par for the course I guess, but this one kicks.

It Don't Have To Change

We recently performed this song at a church function. It's got some soul, even when performed by mostly white people.

Another Way To Die

David tipped me off to this song. It's coming to a Bond-playing theater near you very soon. I'm not a huge fan of the music video, but the song has some very nice parts, and is quite fun on Guitar Hero.

The Riviera Affair

From the very beginning of Ocean's 13. From the Youtube page, this song is apparently called The Riviera Affair, which seems appropriate. I remember seeing the opening for Ocean's 13 and thinking, "that in itself is some fine, fine video art."

Cupid De Locke

The video is dumb (homemade by some cheesy tub who happened to pick a good song), but the song is great when you think you've heard all of the good Smashing Pumpkins songs already and then you find one like this that's 10 years old. Thanks again to KCRW for giving me another new song.

You Do It To Yourself

With my move from Boston to Seattle, I haven't had too much opportunity to find new music. Having settled into my new apartment, I've got something I heard while eating at Chipotle. Mark Ronson featuring Alex Greenwald doing a cover of Radiohead's song Just.

California Soul

I heard this song in a Dockers commercial, of all places. Turns out that they used all of the good parts in the commercial, and the rest of the song isn't so great - not much going on after about the first 30 seconds. We've made a rap song using just the cool part of the song, though it needs some tweaking before I send it out into the world.

Sodier by Erykah Badu

Songs like this, I feel like the beat/rhythm instruments basically write the song for you, once you've got them in place. I.e. you couldn't really go wrong with that backing. I forget what popular song Erykah Badu had done in the past, but this one is very recent.

Hurry On Now by Alice Russel

Mmm, bitter-sweety. That's a lot of soul for a white girl. I've listened to other songs by Alice Russel and none of them were nearly as moving as this one, to me.

Spaz by N.E.R.D.

I heard this song first on a commercial for Microsoft's Zune mp3 player. The beat for the first bit is the best - once the vocals start, it goes to more of a straight beat that doesn't do that much for me. I'm contemplating sampling and rapping over the beat as it is at the start.

Radiohead Performing The Rip

Radiohead doing a cover of a Portishead song, The Rip. I ran across this on Radiohead's webpage. Unfortunately I don't think there are any recordings available other than this video. A very nice melody, which matches to Thom Yorke's voice very nicely.
